Drench groups in Australia
There are a number of drench families commonly
used to control internal parasites in sheep in
Australia. Resistance to white (benzimidazole)
and clear (levamisole) drenches is widespread across
Australia, and resistance to the combined white/clear
drench is increasing. Macrocyclic lactones (ML)
or mectins are the most recently introduced family
of broad-spectrum drenches in Australia. Resistance
to ML drenches is common in WA (Palmer DG et al.
Proceedings of the Australian Sheep Veterinary
Society 2000: p124.) and is emerging in Eastern
States. Resistance occurs independently in each
of the drench families and is directly linked to
the use of that drench family on a property. Rotating
to a different product within the same drench family
will not slow the development of resistance.
